Do you work on all vehicle brands?
We specialize primarily in GM vehicles including Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, Camaro, Corvette, and other LS and LT platform vehicles. While we occasionally service other vehicles, our expertise is focused on GM performance and diagnostics.
Do I need an appointment?
Yes. Nelson Performance operates by appointment only so we can dedicate proper time and attention to each vehicle.
Where are you located?
We are located in the San Antonio, Texas area. Customers travel from across Texas and the United States for diagnostics, tuning, and performance upgrades.
Do customers travel from out of state?
Yes. We have worked with customers in all 50 states and internationally including Canada, Mexico, Germany, Finland, Kuwait, and France.
What is your diagnostic rate?
Our diagnostic fee is $195 for the first hour and $150 per hour for each additional hour. Diagnostics involve testing, data logging, and troubleshooting to properly identify the root cause of a problem.
Why is diagnostics necessary before repairs?
Modern vehicles are complex systems. Proper diagnostics ensures that the actual problem is identified before parts are replaced. This prevents unnecessary parts costs and ensures the correct repair is performed.
Can you diagnose problems other shops couldn’t fix?
Yes. Many vehicles come to us after other shops have been unable to determine the issue. Our experience with GM platforms allows us to identify and resolve difficult drivability and performance problems.
What tuning platforms do you use?
We primarily use HP Tuners for GM vehicles. This allows us to modify engine and transmission calibrations for performance, drivability, and reliability.
Do you offer mail-order tuning?
Yes. Mail-order tuning is available using HP Tuners RTD devices or by sending in your ECM and/or TCM.
Do you offer live tuning?
Yes. Live tuning is available by appointment for vehicles located in the San Antonio area.
Do I need a wideband sensor for tuning?
Many performance setups benefit from wideband monitoring for accurate air-fuel ratio readings. If your vehicle does not have a wideband installed, we can install a bung and sensor for an additional charge.
What performance upgrades do you install?
We install a variety of performance upgrades including camshaft packages, DOD/AFM delete conversions, cylinder head upgrades, forced induction systems (turbochargers and superchargers), and other supporting modifications.
Do you work on vehicles that already have modifications?
Yes. Many of our customers bring vehicles that already have aftermarket parts installed. We can evaluate existing setups and provide tuning or upgrades to improve performance and reliability.
Can you help choose the right parts for my build?
Yes. We regularly help customers select parts that work well together and match their performance goals.
Do you require payment before ordering parts?
Yes. Parts must be paid for before they are ordered.
Can I cancel my order after parts have been ordered?
Once parts have been ordered for your project, refunds may not be possible. Many performance parts are special-order items and are subject to the return policies of the manufacturer or supplier.
Why are parts sometimes non-refundable?
Some performance parts cannot be returned once ordered or installed. In addition, suppliers may charge restocking fees or refuse returns entirely depending on the item.
How do I schedule service?
Appointments can be scheduled by contacting the shop directly.
How long will my vehicle be at the shop?
Completion times vary depending on the scope of work and parts availability. We will provide an estimated timeline once your project has been evaluated.
Can I wait while my vehicle is being serviced?
For most performance upgrades and diagnostics, vehicles will need to be dropped off.
Do performance upgrades affect vehicle reliability?
Performance upgrades may increase stress on vehicle components. While we take every step to ensure quality installations and safe tuning practices, modified vehicles inherently carry increased risk compared to stock vehicles.
Are tuned vehicles legal for street use?
Some modifications may affect emissions compliance depending on local regulations. Customers are responsible for understanding and complying with their local laws.
Do you offer warranties on performance parts?
Many parts carry manufacturer warranties. Labor warranties may vary depending on the type of service performed.
